Summary Of PositionUnder the supervision of the Transportation Coordinator, the driver is responsible for directly transporting physically limited passengers to and from their destinations. The position requires constant interaction with caregivers and community agencies.

EducationHigh School Diploma or GED.
ExperienceMust be 18 years old and have a minimum of 1 year of experience working with the frail elderly population.
Certification(s)/LicensureValid NC Driver’s License with a good driving record and no major moving violations.
Special TrainingMust be able to work effectively in a team environment and operate handicap accessible vehicles. Must act within the scope of their authority to practice, meeting standardized competencies approved by Senior TLC and CMS before working independently and yearly thereafter.
ImmunizationsMust be medically cleared for communicable diseases and have all immunizations up-to-date before engaging in direct participant contact.
Key Responsibilities- Effectively communicates with participants, families, staff, and other agencies and departments.
- Is trained to drive all varieties of vehicles included in the organization’s transportation fleet, understanding that any type of vehicle may be driven upon the instruction of the Transportation Coordinator or designee.
- Drives a specially equipped van to deliver physically limited persons to varied destinations, ensuring wheelchair lifts and tie‑down equipment are properly operated and participants are delivered to appointments in a timely manner.
- Follows established schedules, adjusts them to meet unanticipated changes, and determines the safest and most efficient pick‑up and delivery routes. All schedule or route adjustments must be approved by the Transportation Coordinator or Transportation Support Specialist.
- Assists participants on and off vans using proper safety techniques in a courteous manner; demonstrates proper use, care, and storage of durable medical equipment at all times.
- Assists participants to and from their residence using appropriate safety measures related to the participant’s fall risk; provides door‑to‑door service ensuring the participant exits and enters the residence safely before and after departure.
- Responds to emergencies appropriately.
- Inspects the van and maintains it in a clean, orderly, and safe condition; reports maintenance needs; completes a daily maintenance check‑off sheet and submits it to the Transportation Coordinator or designee as assigned.
- Maintains proper documentation of fuel receipts as instructed by the Transportation Coordinator or designee.
- Participates as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team as requested; attends staff meetings and participates in participant care planning; communicates any changes in participant condition to appropriate team members.
- Completes documentation as required.
- Maintains a safe driving record, evidenced by retaining a North Carolina driver’s license; the valid license will be verified annually.
- Must be able to meet all physical requirements of the position, including standing, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, squatting, and walking for intermittent periods.
