Overview

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art is a major international gallery situated on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead, England. Baltic presents a distinctive and ambitious world-class visual art programme. Housed in a landmark ex-industrial building, Baltic houses 2,600 square metres of art space, making it one of Europe’s largest galleries. Baltic has presented the work of over 850 artists of 78 nationalities in over 300 exhibitions to date.

Baltic is supported by Arts Council England, Gateshead Council and Northumbria University.

Baltic is seeking a freelance Green Creative Producer (Young People) to lead on the development and delivery of nature related programming relevant to young people (including a Green Creative Careers Event) creatively exploring and addressing climate justice alongside Baltic’s Young Producers, as part of the Birds, Bees, Bikes and Trees project.

Producer Fee:
£6,500 - 26 days at £250 per day (7.5hrs)

About Birds, Bees, Bikes and Trees
Birds, Bees, Bikes & Trees (BBBT) is a three‑year National Lottery Climate Action Fund project, now in its final year. It is a partnership between Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, North East Young Dads & Lads (NEYDL) and Newcastle University, supporting young dads to build skills and confidence while helping local communities connect with nature in an urban environment.

The project includes:

Creative learning opportunities for Baltic visitors and community groups
A focus on creating new green spaces and increasing biodiversity around Baltic’s building

Learning and evaluation of the project uses storytelling as a method for sharing insights and encouraging greater engagement with nature and climate action.

Project Themes

Birds
:
From March to August each year, around 200 pairs of red‑listed kittiwakes nest on Baltic’s building as part of the internationally recognised Tyne Kittiwake Colony. Free daily kittiwake tours are offered during the nesting season.

Bees
:
Two rooftop honeybee colonies sited in Baltic’s rooftop are managed by NEYDL beekeepers and used as a training opportunity for young dads. Various talks and hands-on opportunities educate Baltic visitors about bees. Honey produced is sold in Baltic Shop to raise funds for NEYDL. Our green spaces aim to increase forage for a range of local bee species.

Bikes
:
Baltic currently has public and staff bike storage. BBBT aims to improve cycling facilities by installing a bike repair station, enhancing bike storage, and offering public cycling tours. NEYDL also stores bikes onsite for their Wheelie Good Dads programme.

Trees
:
Outdoor planting around the building is limited. Through BBBT, we aim to significantly increase green urban spaces around Baltic, creating new Spaces for Nature.

About the Green Creative Careers Event
The Green Creative Careers event explores the exciting potential of creativity and environmental action. Taking place at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in November 2026, young people from across the region will be invited to hear inspiring talks and engage in workshops to find out about jobs at the intersection of art, science and geography, and how real people found their niche through passion, imagination and care.

Key Outputs and Accountabilities

To research and develop events and activities for young people at Baltic, related to climate action and environmental justice.
To plan and deliver Baltic’s Young Producer sessions, collaborating with young co-producers to shape projects and events, such as a Green Creative Careers event (Nov 2026).
To build effective relationships with a range of partners to support the delivery of programmes for young people, including Birds, Bees, Bikes and Trees project partners North East Young Dads and Lads, and Newcastle University.
