About the position
The post‑holder will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital (SRH) with sessions at South Tyneside Hospital (STDH) and Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). The role involves on‑call attendance, patient management, laboratory reporting and outpatient clinics across the three sites.
Key responsibilities- Attend 1 in 7 attending weeks on‑call, managing Haematology in‑patients at SRH and handling 2‑week wait referrals, liaison work and laboratory reporting.
- Provide once weekly non‑resident overnight on‑call and run 2 adult Haematology clinics per week during non‑attending weeks across both sites.
- Review patients on day‑units at SRH and STDH for inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy prescribing.
- Deliver advice and guidance to GPs.
- Conduct one in 3 ward rounds of Haematology patients admitted to STDH under Medicine (face‑to‑face and remote reviews).
- Prepare laboratory reporting of bone marrow biopsies.
- Attend weekly Consultant Grand Rounds (B28) and participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and bone marrow morphology MDT.
- Provide outpatient service, including monitoring of chemotherapy, and manage Haematology inpatients at SRH.
- Give Haematology advice to GPs south of Tyne & Wear and other hospital specialties on all three sites and handle blood film reporting for all sites.
- Contribute to the overall organisation and planning of the Haematology service within the Medical Specialities Directorate.
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in Haematology (FRCPath Haem) or equivalent.
- Full Specialist registration on the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise; or eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) for UK‑trained applicants or within six months of award.
- Experience in routine laboratory Haematology, including regular reporting of blood films, bone marrow biopsies, advising on coagulation problems and transfusion issues.
- Experience training undergraduates and postgraduates.
- Training in induction therapy for acute leukaemia and autologous stem cell rescue.
- Competence to administer intrathecal chemotherapy.
- Management and leadership skills; able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Experience in academic research, including presentation and publication of peer‑reviewed articles.
- Experience in developing multidisciplinary groups for clinical service provision.
- The post is full‑time but flexible working options are encouraged for those who wish to work less than full‑time.
