Position: SEMH Support Assistant - Perfect for Psychology Grads

If you’re a Psychology graduate who wants to turn theory into real-world impact, this role gives you the chance to support a young person who really needs consistent, specialised care.

We’re working with a supportive school in Gateshead looking for a steady and emotionally intelligent SEMH Support Assistant to work 1:1 with a pupil who finds school challenging. You’ll be there to help them regulate emotions, build resilience and find small wins that make big differences.

This is the kind of role where your psychology background shines. You’ll get to apply everything from behaviour theories to emotional development, all while building trust with a pupil who needs someone patient, grounded and genuinely on their side.

What you’ll be doing
  • Supporting a pupil 1:1 throughout their school day
  • Helping them manage emotions and navigate challenging moments
  • Using positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques
  • Encouraging engagement with learning and structured routines
  • Working closely with pastoral teams, SENCOs and class teachers
  • Tracking small steps of progress and celebrating every achievement
What we’re looking for
  • A degree in Psychology or a related field
  • Experience supporting children or vulnerable young people
  • A calm, thoughtful approach with a natural ability to build rapport
  • Strong communication skills and emotional resilience
  • A genuine interest in SEMH, trauma-informed practice and behaviour support
What you get with Protocol Education
  • Weekly pay through PAYE, no umbrella deductions
  • A dedicated consultant who supports you from day one
  • FREE online CPD including behaviour, autism and mental health training
  • Opportunities across SEMH, SEND and alternative settings
  • Fast-track registration
  • Referral rewards when you recommend a friend
