Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Role Overview

As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, you will support teachers in delivering high-quality education while confidently leading whole-class learning when required. You will deliver pre-planned lessons during teacher absence, provide targeted interventions, and work closely with teaching staff to help pupils achieve their full potential.

This role is ideal for an experienced HLTA or an experienced Teaching Assistant who holds a relevant HLTA qualification and is passionate about supporting pupils across the primary age range.

Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Key Responsibilities Teaching & Learning
  • Deliver pre-planned lessons across a range of year groups in the teacher's absence
  • Support the planning and delivery of engaging learning activities
  • Provide targeted intervention and small group support to raise attainment
  • Adapt learning activities to meet the needs of pupils, including those with SEND and additional learning needs
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teaching staff
Classroom Support
  • Promote positive behaviour and maintain a productive learning environment
  • Build positive relationships with pupils, encouraging confidence and engagement
  • Support pupils' social, emotional, and academic development
  • Help create a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment
Professional Practice
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, senior leaders, and wider school staff
  • Follow school policies and safeguarding procedures at all times
  • Contribute positively to the wider school community where appropriate
  • Promote the welfare and wellbeing of all pupils
Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Essential Criteria
  • HLTA status or a relevant Level 4 qualification (or significant experience in a similar role)
  • Previous experience working within a primary school setting
  • Confidence delivering lessons to whole classes
  • Strong communication and classroom management skills
  • Experience supporting pupils with a range of learning needs, including SEND
  • A flexible, proactive, and positive approach to supporting teaching and learning
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • Must live locally to Gateshead - no relocation
