SEMH Teaching Assistant | Gateshead

£98–£120 per day | Full Time | September 2026 Start

We’re looking for a SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Gateshead from September.

This isn't your typical classroom TA role.

You'll be supporting young people who may have struggled in mainstream education and who need adults around them who are patient, consistent and willing to see the person behind the behaviour
.

Some days will be challenging. Some days will be incredibly rewarding. And sometimes, a small breakthrough can be the biggest achievement of the day.

• Working 1:1 and with small groups.
• Supporting pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs.
• Developing positive relationships with pupils.
• Helping young people recognise and manage their emotions.
• Supporting pupils when they become dysregulated.
• Using positive behaviour strategies.
• Helping pupils identify triggers and coping mechanisms.
• Encouraging engagement with learning.
• Maintaining consistent boundaries.
• Supporting teachers within the classroom.
• Helping pupils develop independence and confidence.
• Supporting during break and lunchtime.
• Recognising and celebrating progress.

You're someone who:

• Doesn't panic under pressure.
• Can remain calm during challenging situations.
• Has plenty of patience.
• Builds relationships naturally.
• Understands the importance of consistency.
• Can be firm without being confrontational.
• Has a positive attitude.
• Genuinely wants to help young people succeed.

Experience in SEMH, PRU, alternative provision, youth work, care, mentoring, behaviour support or sports coaching would be a bonus.

We're also happy to consider candidates with strong transferable experience who have the right personality and approach.

• £98–£120 per day

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
