Job Summary

An exciting opportunity exists for Senior UTC Practitioners to join the Gateshead Urgent Care Service, working at the Blaydon Urgent Treatment Centre and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). This role supports patient care, provides mentorship to junior staff, and manages front‑desk streaming at QEH to ensure patients receive appropriate care.

Job Responsibilities
  • Deliver high‑quality, evidence‑based, patient‑focused care and treatment planning primarily in the UTC setting but also throughout all areas of Urgent and Emergency Care.
  • Use national and local guidelines to support safe decision‑making and practice.
  • Perform sound history taking, clinical skills and maintain knowledge of illness and injuries.
  • Order relevant investigations, interpret results (e.g., x‑rays) and act on findings appropriately.
  • Prescribe medications suitable to treatment plans.
  • Continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework and ensure ongoing professional development.
  • Work flexibly across ED and UTCs, serving as Shift Lead at QEH and Blaydon UTCs and managing front‑desk streaming.
  • Mentor junior colleagues, supporting both formal and informal development.
  • Implement change and lead clinical development initiatives.
Person Specification Essential Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse or equivalent qualification for allied health professionals.
  • Degree in Nursing or equivalent for allied health professionals.
  • Completion of a clinical skills course and nurse competencies.
Experience
  • Recent experience in an acute setting.
  • Autonomous working.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
  • Experience leading clinical development and managing change.
  • Experience working in a first‑contact role (e.g., primary care or ED).
Skills / Attributes / Knowledge
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Leadership skills and innovation.
  • Flexible working and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Capacity to organise and prioritise workload.
  • Clear, concise record‑keeping and reporting.
  • Understanding of child protection skills.
  • Basic IT skills.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Advanced / Immediate life support.
  • Paediatric clinical skills and competencies (attained or in progress).
  • Non‑medical prescribing (working towards, completion within 18 months).
  • Teaching qualification / mentorship.
Experience
  • Multidisciplinary/multi‑agency working.
  • Research, audit or quality improvement projects.
  • Previous work as a nurse practitioner or in an acute setting.
Skills / Attributes / Knowledge
  • Skills specific to an acute setting.
Physical Requirements Essential
  • Ability to move and handle safely without causing harm.
Desirable
  • Training in moving and handling procedures.
