South Tyneside and Gateshead Sexual Health Team is looking for a qualified Sexual Health Specialist Nurse. The position is permanent, part‑time and will be based mainly at the Gateshead Sexual Health Service in Trinity Square Health Centre, with occasional duties at Palmers Community Hospital in Jarrow and outreach locations.
The successful candidate will be an experienced specialist nurse, friendly and enthusiastic, with a flexible approach to supporting the clinical team. The post holder must maintain a sensitive and non‑judgemental approach while providing comprehensive sexual health care to patients.
Main duties of the job- Demonstrate previous experience working within an integrated sexual health service.
- Maintain and respect strict confidentiality standards for service users.
- Work effectively as part of the wider sexual health team and demonstrate excellent communication skills.
- Be required to work evening and weekend duties as part of a monthly roster.
- Travel between clinic locations and for meetings as necessary.
- Co‑ordinate the delivery and development of the sexual health service through effective evidence‑based practice in line with national standards for patient safety and monitoring.
- Be accountable for the planning and delivery of safe, effective and compassionate patient care in relation to dedicated pathways, working as an autonomous practitioner.
- Continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework.
- Exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code of Conduct.
- Ensure effective internal and external communication regarding patient care and resources.
- Provide education and training to clinical staff across the Trust.
- Provide specialist clinical advice and support to patients and staff within the Trust for sexual health management.
- Provide direct access for patients, face to face or telephone consultation.
- Represent the service nationwide.
- Ensure national and local targets for sexual health are met.
- Manage/practice practitioner‑led clinics, reviewing patients and optimising complex treatment regimes.
- Undertake research relevant to the specialist area.
- Comply with the Trust vision, values and behavioural compact.

Person Specification Skills and Knowledge- Evidence of innovation in practice.
- Evidence of practice development.
- Awareness of national health and social care policy.
- Knowledge of best practice in sexual and reproductive health.
- Knowledge of current issues relating to health service provision and the public health agenda.
- Ability to practice confidentially within legal frameworks and policies.
- Clinical teaching experience.
- Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, with persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills as required.
- Able to work without supervision.
- Competent in the use of IT packages.
- Termination of pregnancy decision making and referral skills.
- Developed physical skills with a need for accuracy for procedures such as venepuncture, administration of local anaesthetic, insertion of contraceptive implant.
- Basic keyboard skills.
- Use of electronic resources to input, save and provide data and information, making full use of the electronic record system.
- Degree in nursing or a relevant clinical degree (UK equivalent).
- Practice assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
- Recognised competency‑based qualifications in integrated sexual health (e.g. Management of Sexually Transmitted Infections and Contraception in Practice, Integrated Sexual Health Module, or equivalent).
- Cervical cytology qualification.
- Evidence of competency in sub‑dermal implant insertion and removal.
- Non‑medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
- Previous clinical experience in an integrated sexual health setting.
- Experience of leading a team or supervising junior staff.
