Windham School District provides educational programs to meet the needs of the residents within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. We currently operate on 9 campuses within Region 12 ESC and have 97 campuses total throughout Texas. We are recognized as one of the largest correctional education systems in the nation offering a variety of life skills, literacy, vocational, and post‑secondary classes, including CTE.

Job Description

Job Title: Academic Teacher – Integrated Education and Training.
Retirees of the Texas Teachers Retirement System (TRS) may apply. Consistent with district policy SD‑7.17 "Employment of Retirees," selected applicants are responsible for reimbursing the district, through payroll deduction, for the current rate of all TRS pension or TRS Care surcharges. As of September 1, 2025, the TRS pension surcharge rate is 16.5 % and the TRS Care surcharge is $535/month.

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt –
Pay Group: T0‑21 (Based on Experience)

Primary

Purpose:

Instruct adult learners in the Integrated Education and Training Program by providing contextualized lessons while co‑teaching with the Career and Technical Education instructor.

Qualifications

Education/Certification/

Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Must meet State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) requirements for area of assignment. Elementary or Secondary level certification in a foundation subject area. This position requires personal technology that will enable the completion of job duties and responsibilities when working remotely.

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to convey ideas and instructions clearly and concisely. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Skill in organizing and maintaining accurate records.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Plan and direct learning activities of adult incarcerated students enrolled in the Integrated Education and Training program to include co‑teaching with Career and Technical Education.
  • Provide contextualized instruction in Reading and Math.
  • Prepare contextualized lessons for English Language Learner students on a range of language proficiency levels according to WSD policy.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques, to include co‑teaching and developing single set of learning objectives.
  • Keep informed of and comply with State regulations concerning Integrated Education and Training.
  • Follow the Windham School District (WSD) curriculum guide(s) for area of assignment.
  • Participate in district staff development programs as required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Participate in all evaluations and self‑studies as required by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and contracting agency.
  • Maintain lesson plans in accordance with the criteria established by WSD policy.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records in the manner prescribed by WSD.
  • Submit reports as required by program needs and administrative requests.
  • Give clear oral and written instructions to students.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom that is firm, fair, and consistent in applying classroom rules.
  • Create a positive classroom environment conducive to learning and educational growth of the students.
  • Prepare and use various methods to teach basic concepts for subject level.
  • Plan activities for individual student needs and engage and maintain the interest of students in instructional activity.
  • Arrange seating, materials, and displays in such a manner as to harmonize with instructional aims and procedures.
  • Keep informed of and comply with all policies and procedures pertinent to the use of instructional materials, equipment, and textbooks.
  • Keep informed of and comply with policies of the WSD and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
  • Follow statutory and agency regulations.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, methods, and policy according to WSD requirements.
