The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship Doctoral (CGRS

D) program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. This support allows scholars to more fully concentrate on their doctoral studies, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.

CIHR and partner(s) financial contributions are subject to availability of funds. Should CIHR or partner(s) funding levels not be available or decrease due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to awards received as a result of this funding opportunity.

  • The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $72,265,000. Of this $72,265,00:
    • Approximately $71,065,000 over three (3) years will be available for the open Canada Graduate Research Scholarship Doctoral competition; enough to fund approximately 591 awards.
    • $1,200,000 will be available over three (3) years to fund at least ten (10) additional awards to support meritorious Black Scholars .
  • The maximum amount per award is $40,000 per year for up to three (3) years. Award funding is allocated as follows:
    • Training stipend: $40,000 per annum.

Applicant self-identification information may be used by CIHR to consider individuals for designated funding, should it become available.

In Budget 2024 , funding was provided to support an increase in the number of awards, a portion of which will be dedicated to support priority research areas. Agencies will make additional award offers for selected meritorious applications that align with one or more of the priority areas.

The priority research areas are:

  • Advanced digital technologies (including AI, quantum, and cybersecurity)
  • Health, including biotechnology
  • Clean technology and resource value chains
  • Environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic
  • Food and water security
  • Democratic and community resilience
  • Manufacturing and advanced materials
  • Defence and dual-use technologies

The Government of Canada has provided additional funds to increase direct support for Black scholars . Canadian applicants (including permanent residents and protected persons) who self-identify as Black and provide consent in their application to be considered for funds designated to specific groups may be able to receive this funding through a doctoral scholarship as part of this initiative. CIHR has 10 additional CGRS D awards reserved for this initiative.

Up to 29 awards will be reserved to support meritorious First Nation, Inuk (Inuit), or Métis (Indigenous) 1 applicants whose nations or communities are located in Canada. To the limit of available funding,Indigenousapplicantswho receive an award will also be offered a supplement valued at $5,000for one year. To be considered for this funding applicants must complete and upload the CGRS D Indigenous Attestation Form with their application in Research Net.

Successful applicants may be required to provide documentation to support affirmation or Indigenous citizenship or membership before receiving their award/supplement.
