Organizational context:
The Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA) Geneva Branch provides substantive and organizational support to UN bodies on disarmament issues. It disseminates information on disarmament to various stakeholders. This internship is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and offers a temporary, full-time opportunity within the ODA.
Job purpose:This internship within the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA) in Geneva aims to provide practical experience in political affairs. The intern will support the Branch's work by assisting in document preparation, research, and attending meetings. This role contributes to the ODA's mandate of providing objective information on disarmament issues and supporting various disarmament-related conventions and bodies. The internship offers exposure to international disarmament efforts and the functioning of the United Nations system.
Responsibilities:The intern will provide assistance in drafting and preparing official documents, press releases, and statements. Responsibilities include maintaining records and datasets, attending and summarizing conferences and meetings, and conducting research using various sources like documents, legal databases, and the internet. The intern will also offer support during conferences, contribute to web presentations and social media presence, and undertake other required duties.
This role operates under the guidance of an internship coordinator and direct supervision.
Applicants must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be in the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). The field of study should be closely related to political affairs or disarmament. Fluency in English is required; knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
Work experience:Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants must be pursuing or have completed a relevant university degree. A demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is necessary. Proficiency in standard software applications, including MS Office Suite, is also required.
