MAIN PURPOSE OF

THE ROLE

A Learning Support Assistant (LSA) is an educational assistant who works directly with a student who presents barriers to learning in the classroom setting or has been identified with additional education needs (ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, etc.). These assistants understand learning differences and disabilities and are supported to utilise up-to-date and evidence-based methods to support students. LSAs enable students with additional education needs to experience the benefits of being included in a mainstream system while receiving the extra attention that he or she needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Learning Support Assistant is responsible, in collaboration with the teacher, for:

  • Support the student’s inclusion, participation, and progress in the mainstream classroom.
  • Implement and monitor the student’s Individual Study Plan (ISP) or Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to adapt strategies, materials, and assessments.
  • Encourage the student’s independence and provide targeted learning and behaviour support.
  • Maintain regular progress notes, contribute to ISP/IEP reviews, and communicate professionally with families.
  • Uphold confidentiality and adhere to CDL safeguarding policies and procedures.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

LSAs have training and/or qualifications in education and additional learning needs, child development, psychology, counselling or a related field. They may be required to have further training or experience in fields such as literacy difficulties, numeracy difficulties, attention challenges and autistic spectrum conditions. LSAs are required to remain open to continued professional development to ensure that their approaches to additional needs are up-to-date and founded in evidence-based practice.

The Learning Support Assistant demonstrates a patient, supportive and encouraging attitude, maintaining clear and professional communication with students and colleagues. They work collaboratively as part of a team, remain open to constructive feedback, and show a genuine commitment to continuous professional development.

Team

LSAs are to approach their duties with a team attitude. This collaborative approach is to ensure the continued provision of the highest possible quality of support for the student. The LSA must maintain ongoing open communication regarding the students’ progress with the following individuals:

  • The student
  • The Learning Support Coordinator (SENCO)
  • The parents or legal guardians of the student
  • The homeroom teacher and teachers of courses in which the student has support
  • The school counsellor (if necessary)
  • The Head of student support services
  • The school principals and division heads
  • The boarding house staff
ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

It is important that the post holder is always aware of Child Protection guidelines and observes a professional distance from students whilst still developing effective working and caring relationships.
