Job Description & How to Apply Below
Distinguished Senior Researcher – Philosophy of Language & Mind
A stealth‑stage AI company working at the frontier of machine reasoning is seeking an exceptional philosopher for a senior research role in Geneva.
We believe the deepest questions in AI — about meaning, reference, and representation — demand engagement with the most serious scholarship in philosophy of language and mind. This role sits at that intersection.
You bring:- 20+ years at Full Professor level in philosophy of language, mind, or related fields
- A strong publication record with major academic presses
- Deep expertise in reference theory, semantics, and the metaphysics of meaning
- Fluent English;
French strongly preferred
We offer a permanent CDI contract, highly competitive compensation, on‑site in Geneva, with worldwide travel.
Applications reviewed on a rolling basis. Send CV, cover letter, writing sample, and one referee contact — subject line: your name + job title.
Key responsibilities include:- Leading and conducting original research in philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, metaphysics of meaning, and related foundational domains.
- Serving as the primary intellectual interface between pure mathematics, philosophy, and software engineering — facilitating the translation and application of foundational ideas across disciplines.
- Convening and participating in high‑level cross‑disciplinary seminars and working groups involving researchers of international distinction.
- Advising on the conceptual foundations of models, machine reasoning, and artificial intelligence from the perspective of the philosophy of language and mind.
- Reviewing, editing, and preparing academic work for publication in leading outlets, including with major academic presses.
- Contributing to the intellectual direction of the organisation's research agenda on the nature and limits of representation, meaning, and artificial cognition.
- Engaging with foundational questions in the philosophy of mathematics, including the role of infinity in understanding Nature and computation.
- Doctoral degree (D.Phil., Ph.D., or equivalent) in Philosophy from a leading research university, with specialisation in philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, or closely related areas.
- Postdoctoral research experience at an internationally recognised institution is highly desirable.
- A minimum of twenty years of internationally recognised research at the professorial level (Full Professor or equivalent) in a relevant philosophical discipline.
- An established record of monograph and edited volume publication with major academic presses (e.g., Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press).
- Demonstrated expertise in direct reference theory, semantics of natural language, and the metaphysics of meaning and representation.
- Proven ability to convene and facilitate dialogue among researchers of the highest distinction (including Fields, Turing, and Nobel medalists) across disciplinary boundaries.
- Recent engagement with questions of artificial intelligence, the Turing Test, or the relation between computation, infinity, and reality.
- Recent demonstrated experience successfully editing academic work for publication in top‑tier outlets.
- Philosophy of language: theories of reference, semantics of natural language, meaning of proper names and common nouns.
- Philosophy of mind: thought, cognition, and the relationship between linguistic and mental representation.
- Foundations of meaning and representation — of direct relevance to the conceptual foundations of language models and machine reasoning.
- Metaphysics: modality, essence, and the place of infinity in understanding Nature.
- History of philosophy (Descartes, Spinoza) on mind, body, and the natural world is an asset.
- English — Native or C2 academic working proficiency (required).
- French — Fluent (C1–C2) strongly preferred given the Geneva location.
- Additional languages are an asset.
- Eligibility to reside and work in Switzerland, or ability to obtain the requisite work authorisation.
- The position is based on‑site in the Canton of Geneva; remote or hybrid arrangements are not available for this role.
- Regular worldwide travel is required as an integral part of the role, including attendance at international conferences, research collaborations, and high‑level cross‑disciplinary convenings.
