Organizational context

The Russian teaching position is within the Language Training Programme at the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). This program promotes multilingualism and enhances staff language abilities, offering courses in multiple languages to UN staff, diplomats, and mission personnel. The role reports to the Training Officer.

Job purpose

The primary purpose of this role is to teach Russian as a foreign language at all levels and across all skills, catering to both native and non-native speakers within the UN context. This includes developing and delivering general and specialized courses, both in-person and online, and providing pedagogical support. The incumbent is also responsible for administrative tasks, setting program objectives, preparing and administering language examinations, and potentially recruiting and managing contract teachers.

The role contributes to the overall objectives of the Language Training Programme by ensuring effective Russian language instruction and program development.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include teaching Russian as a foreign language at all proficiency levels and for all language skills. This involves preparing course materials, correcting learner work, and developing/delivering general or specialized Russian courses, including advanced writing skills, tailored for the UN environment. The role encompasses teaching in-person, blended, and online formats, providing pedagogical support, and offering individual feedback to learners. Administrative duties include corresponding with learners, maintaining records, and managing attendance.

The incumbent will also serve as the focal point for the Russian program, setting objectives, developing and marking examinations, administering tests, and potentially recruiting and overseeing contract teachers. Further duties involve updating curricula, materials, and assessments, designing courses and workshops, and collaborating on joint projects with other language programs.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in language studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, or education/pedagogy is required. The degree must be from an institution where Russian was the primary language of instruction.

Work experience

A minimum of five years of experience teaching Russian as a foreign/second language to adults in a multicultural setting is required. Additionally, at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, or adult teacher training for Russian is necessary. Experience with online teaching, learning platforms, and creating learning materials is desirable.
