Location: Genf

Mechanical Engineer - Thin Film Coatings

Full‑time position in the Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings group of the Technology Department, contributing to the Beam Screen Treatment (BST) project at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). After training, you will assemble, commission, and lead the deployment of advanced coating systems in the LHC tunnel, operating one of the world’s most complex scientific instruments.

Responsibilities
  • Train and operate coating systems for depositing carbon thin films in the LHC beam lines.
  • Lead a team deploying the coating process in the LHC tunnel.
  • Train team members on coating system operation.
  • Produce documentation for quality assurance of the coating process.
  • Report to senior engineer to coordinate with other teams.
  • Propose improvements to coating systems, procedures and methodologies.
  • Participate in maintenance of coating systems.
  • Work within a multicultural team of engineers and technicians.
  • Supervise team members.
  • Assemble and operate mechanical systems.
  • Coordinate field activities.
  • Follow up on process quality.
  • Design mechanical parts with CAD software.
  • Operate vacuum or coating systems (asset).
Skills and Qualifications
  • Mechanical assembly.
  • Team management.
  • Operation of vacuum systems.
  • Operation of coating systems.
  • Quality assurance follow‑up.
  • Reporting.
  • Mechanical design with CATIA or equivalent CAD software.
  • Spoken and written English; willing to learn French.
  • Professional background in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related field, with either:
    • Master’s degree and 2 to 6 years of post‑graduation professional experience.
    • PhD and no more than 3 years of post‑graduation professional experience.
  • Never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Contract duration: 24 months, with possible extension to 36 months.

Working hours:

40 hours per week.

Job flexibility:
Fully onsite.
