Structural Engineer, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
Location: Genf
Company Description
CERNAt CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Job Description
Introduction:
As a Structural Civil Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, analysis and technical oversight of civil engineering structures throughout the project lifecycle, from feasibility studies to construction support. You will contribute to the development, maintenance and rehabilitation of CERN's infrastructure, ensuring structural integrity, safety and compliance with applicable standards while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
You will join the Design Office Section (SCE-TOD-DO) within the Technical Office and Development (TOD) Group of the Site and Civil Engineering (SCE) Department, whose members participate in design, drafting and calculation support for maintenance and works for tertiary and industrial buildings.
Functions:
- Perform feasibility, preliminary and detailed design studies for civil engineering structures (surface buildings, underground installations, roads and utility networks), including structural analysis and dimensioning, seismic design, and the definition of structural concepts and technical solutions adapted to project constraints.
- Review, validate and coordinate design drawings and models produced by internal drafters and external consultants, and participate in the BIM management process by providing structural engineering input and ensuring technical consistency within models.
- Assess existing structures and define reinforcement, adaptation or modification solutions, and contribute to infrastructure maintenance and consolidation programmes through structural diagnostics, condition assessments, technical recommendations, maintenance plans and monitoring of structural pathologies.
- Prepare technical specifications, contribute to calls for tender in collaboration with Procurement, and manage framework contracts related to structural engineering services.
- Support construction phases through technical follow-up, site inspections and validation of works.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of civil engineering or a related field.
Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in civil engineering design and structural calculations, in particular reinforced and prestressed concrete, structural steel, and special civil works (e.g. diaphragm walls, Berlin-type retaining walls).
- Experience in road and infrastructure design, structural assessment and monitoring, cost estimation of construction works, and feasibility and preliminary studies.
- Good knowledge of underground structures and works (technical galleries, tunnels and caverns) would be an asset.
- First experience in hydraulic calculations and network design would be an asset
Technical competencies:
- Use of office software packages.
- Structural design, analysis and verification of civil engineering structures, including the design of industrial and institutional buildings integrating functional and technical requirements, complex equipment loads, networks and operational constraints.
- Structural assessment of existing structures, definition of rehabilitation solutions, and management of preliminary design phases in coordination with technical disciplines.
- Cost estimation and control, with a good understanding of design documentation and coordination processes (Revit and AutoCAD environment).
Behavioural competencies:
- Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
- Achieving Results: delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs.
- Solving Problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
- Communicating Effectively: demonstrating a pro-active approach to resolving differences; addressing issues of conflict constructively.
- Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
Language skills:
- Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
