Organizational Setting

The Liaison Office with the United Nations in Geneva is responsible for the liaison with the Government of Switzerland, the country's civil society and the International Organizations based in Geneva, Switzerland. Considering the presence of a large number of international organizations, Member States and Non-Governmental Organizations, which provides a significant platform for engagement and partnership with key stakeholders, the Liaison Office i) ensures that relevant FAO Governing body decisions and the overall work of the organization are brought to the policy dialogues, mechanisms and relevant discussions in Geneva;

ii) promotes and raises awareness on FAO's technical work and activities, among Members and Organizations in Geneva, and the general public; iii) serves as the focal point for Members accredited to FAO from Geneva.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are a distinct group of 40 States (39 FAO Members and one Associate Member) that share common social, economic, and environmental challenges. They are located across three main regions: the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and South China Sea (AIS). Recognized as a special case for both environment and development at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, SIDS face heightened vulnerabilities due to their geographic isolation, limited resources, and exposure to climate change impacts.

In the context of these challenges, SIDS remain at the top of FAO's agenda, as demonstrated by (i) having a dedicated office for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs); (ii) the SIDS Solutions Platform which was established following the first SIDS Solutions Forum, co-hosted in August 2021; and (iii) the organization of the thematic SIDS Solutions Dialogue Series by the Liaison Office in Geneva, in collaboration with the Liaison Offices in Brussels and New York and the Office for…
