Organizational context:
The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) was established by the UN General Assembly in June 2023. This role, currently based in Geneva, may be subject to relocation to Damascus, Syria, or another operational location. Incumbents report to a Human Rights Officer.
Job purpose:The Associate Human Rights Officer will support the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) by researching and collecting human rights information, including gender dimensions, from various sources. The role involves assisting with digital investigations, preserving online information, and assessing its credibility. The officer will draft reports, participate in consultations, and maintain awareness of human rights issues and legal developments.
Additionally, the position contributes to capacity-building through training, promotes community mobilization, liaises with stakeholders to gather data on vulnerable groups, and supports data analysis for planning and reporting. The role aims to prevent human rights violations and seek remedial actions.
Research and collect information on human rights matters, including gender dimensions, from diverse sources, and analyze its impact. Assist with digital investigations related to international law and the institution's mandate. Collect and preserve online information, assessing its credibility and reliability according to established protocols. Draft reports and correspondence concerning the institution's mandate. Participate in hearings and consultations, preparing summaries. Maintain awareness of current human rights issues and political/legal developments.
Participate in human rights training programs for capacity building. Discuss and integrate human rights issues into political, humanitarian, and economic efforts. Promote community mobilization and rights exercises. Liaise with government, NGOs, UN agencies, and other partners to establish baseline data, focusing on vulnerable groups. Design and maintain databases for project tracking. Contribute to data analysis, trend identification, and reporting using visualization methods.
An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted. No experience is needed for candidates who have passed the YPP, NCRE, or G to P examinations.
Work experience:A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or a related area is required. Experience engaging with victims, such as refugees or families of missing persons, is desirable. No experience is needed for candidates who have passed a UN Competitive Recruitment Examination.
