The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence.
We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
The Security & Crisis Management Research & Development Associate will play a key role in supporting three core areas of the team’s mandate. First, the position contributes to data analytics and research functions; second, it supports the organization-wide transition to new security management applications; third, the role includes engagement and support on security-related matters for our partners across the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
In the area of data analytics and research, the Associate works collaboratively to compile, prepare, validate, and visualize the ICRC’s weekly, quarterly, and annual security and safety incident data, as well as minimum security requirements data. The role also involves producing ad hoc analyses and incident-related reports in response to requests from SCMS colleagues.
In addition, the Associate supports the human and technical change management processes associated with the transition to new security management tools. This includes contributing to the planning, coordination, and implementation of change initiatives, and accompanying colleagues worldwide as they adopt and integrate the new tools into their operational practices.
The Associate also provides support, engagement and accompaniment to RCRC Movement partners on a range of issues covering tools, research, operational security and guidance in emergencies.
Main Duties & Responsibilities IThe position is closely involved in the research and development of technology solutions for operational security management in the field. It combines hands‑on work with security and safety datasets relating to humanitarian personnel with the preparation of analyses, data visualizations, and reporting products for internal and global stakeholders.
Within the SCMS unit, the Associate supports platforms that enable the management of security across the ICRC. This initiative brings together several advanced platforms designed to manage different aspects of staff security in conflict‑affected environments.
As part of the support team, the role requires strong logical and deductive thinking to navigate the ICRC’s technology landscape and databases in order to feed, maintain, and enhance the platform. In addition, the incumbent contributes to the compilation, preparation, validation, and visualization of the ICRC’s quarterly security and safety incident data, including data related to Minimum Security Requirements.
Main Duties & Responsibilities IIIn this context, the Associate:
- Supports the planning, coordination, and accompaniment of change management processes related to the adoption of new project tools across the global organization, as colleagues worldwide progressively appropriate the tools.
- Generates narrative analyses of data, including assessments of trends, highlights, areas of concern, and significant developments.
- Shares analyses and assessments with SCMS colleagues, Regional staff, and Operational Management to support data interpretation and the identification of action points.
- Ensures that dashboards are user‑friendly and present all relevant information in a coherent and interactive manner.
- Liaises closely with SCMS counterparts, other relevant departments as well as RCRC Movement Partners to ensure effective support for tools and products.
