Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe position is located in the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (UNODET), with a duty station in Geneva, Switzerland. UNODET was established on 1 January 2025, with a mandate to advise the senior leadership of the United Nations on key trends in technology, serve as advocate and focal point for digital cooperation, facilitate multi-stakeholder policy dialogue on digital and emerging technologies, strengthen system-wide coordination within and across the United Nations system, and support the follow-up and implementation of the Global Digital Compact.
Track1:
Research Digital Policy and Technical Content
- Support the drafting, editing, and structuring of high-quality technical reports, presentations, and knowledge products on emerging technologies.
- Conduct background research and contribute to digital policy and emerging technologies analysis.
- Assist with technical editing, content architecture, and use of digital tools and platforms for document design.
- Contribute to the integration of technical content in digital formats, including website structure and internal platforms.
Stakeholder Engagement and Policy Coordination
- Support the implementation of the Global Digital Compact (GDC), including engaging stakeholders across sectors to promote awareness and participation in GDC implementation.
- Plan and support public information on events related to the GDC.
- Develop and curate content for the GDC online platform.
- Collect and organize data to populate and maintain the platform.
- Monitor developments in relevant UN mechanisms, including the Human Rights Council, UNCTAD conferences, and Geneva-based processes.
- Track the review process of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).
- Contribute to system-wide UN coordination on digital and emerging technologies, ensuring alignment with GDC priorities.
Research Digital Policy and Technical Content
A graduate student (Master's or PhD) in Computer Science, Technology Governance, Data Governance, or Information Technology.
Track 2:Stakeholder Engagement and Policy Coordination
A graduate student (Master's) in International Relations, Political Affairs, Law, Economics, Public or Business Administration, Technology Governance, Data Governance, Internet Governance, Communications, Media Studies, or Sociology.
Desired
Skills:
- Familiarity with technological governance, such as internet governance, artificial intelligence, and digital human rights online.
- Strong research and data management skills, including experience with structured datasets and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
- Experience with website content management and digital communication platforms.
- Excellent organizational, event planning, and communication skills.
Applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent).
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Applicants must be a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or PhD program, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD program.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Official languages include Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.
Intern Specific TextInterns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
