Duties and Responsibilities

BACKGROUND The International Trade Centre (ITC) is the joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization fully dedicated to the development of small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs). The internship opportunity is situated within the Data Management Team of the Information Technology & Systems (ITS) Section. Data is a strategic asset at ITC, enabling informed decision‑making, effective programming, and accountability to stakeholders including beneficiaries, funders, and partners.

In alignment with the UN Data Strategy, ITC’s Data Management Initiative aims to enhance organizational effectiveness through a systematic, organization‑wide approach to data management and governance. As part of this initiative, ITC is developing robust policies, practices, and systems to foster a data‑driven culture and leverage data for strategic insights and improved service delivery. The intern will support the development and enhancement of data management applications and governance processes, with a particular focus on data storage and data retention.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Under the direct supervision of the Associate Data Analyst and overall guidance of the Chief, ITS, the selected candidate is expected to:

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of data management applications, including new features and functionalities and analytics products.
  • Support the design, development, deployment and testing of applications and features prior to official launch.
  • Undertake research and analysis on data governance topics, particularly data storage and retention.
  • Assist in categorizing data types across ITC based on business needs and operational realities.
  • Support the drafting of recommendations for ITC’s data governance framework and related processes.

    Qualifications / Special Skills
    • Education:

      a) Be enrolled in the final academic year of the first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); OR b) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); OR c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation. Relevant fields of study:
      Data Sciences, Economics, Management, Law, or related disciplines.
    • Work Experience:

      No work experience is required. Previous experience or internships in data management or governance is considered an asset.
    • Skills:

      Adaptability and a proactive mindset;
      Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills;
      Excellent communication skills, both writing and speaking;
      Familiarity with application development process;
      Understanding of applied AI tools.
    Languages

    Fluency in English is required.

    LEARNING ELEMENTS

    • Gain hands‑on experience in data management, governance, and digital transformation within a UN agency.
    • Gain experience in the work of ITC and deepen knowledge and understanding of IT application development processes.
    • Develop skills in policy drafting and strategic recommendation formulation.
