At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
IntroductionAs an Applied Physicist, you will join the ATLAS Group at CERN and be part of the team which is working on the upgrade of the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector. In this upgrade you will play a crucial role, leading the electronics integration in the new RPC detectors to be used in the Inner layer of the Barrel Muon Spectrometer.
An important part of the job will be the installation and commissioning of the new detectors in the ATLAS cavern. Your experience in commissioning and operations of gaseous detectors will be a strong asset which coupled with your versatility, and strong team spirit will be essential to the success of the ATLAS muon upgrade program.
FunctionsLead the production and testing of electronics boards, including:
- Testing and validating pre-production Front-End, Low Voltage, and connection boards.
- Coordinating quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) activities.
- Supporting the integration of electronics boards into RPC detectors.
- Participating in QA/QC testing of fully equipped chambers.
- Debugging of problematic chambers.
Support the installation of new chambers in the ATLAS experiment, including:
- Coordinating testing before and after installation.
- Acting as the main contact between the RPC project and Technical Coordination during installation.
- Coordinating detector commissioning after installation.
- PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Physics or a related field.
- Strong experience in the design, debugging and operations of fast electronics boards for gaseous detectors.
- Demonstrated experience in operating and commissioning of gaseous detectors.
- Knowledge of gas detectors physics.
- Ability to work effectively in small to medium-sized teams under a leadership role.
- Design and simulation of front-end electronics for analog sensors and transducers.
- Knowledge and application of gas based particle detection technologies.
- Testing and validation of detector, accelerator and beam line components.
- Analysis and optimisation of detector performance.
- Assembly and integration of detectors.
- Demonstrating Accountability: using openness and honesty to interact constructively with others.
- Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
- Solving Problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
- Managing Self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
