Calorimeter Development Physicist

As an applied physicist, you will contribute to the development of radiation-hard Spaghetti Calorimeter (Spa Cal) technology with dense absorbers to achieve picosecond-level time resolutions. This work is part of the strategic detector R&D programme within the Experimental Physics (EP) Department at CERN.

• Actively participate in ongoing R&D efforts to develop and optimise Spaghetti Calorimeter (Spa Cal) technology for the LHCb Pico Cal and other applications.
• Take part in the test-beam and laboratory characterisation of Spa Cal prototype modules, with the aim of optimising the time resolution.
• Contribute to studies aimed at optimising photon detectors for Spa Cal technology.
• Characterise novel radiation-hard, fast crystal scintillating fibres and organic scintillating materials.
• Document the results in scientific publications.

• You are a national of aCERN Member State or Associate Member State . Currently, we cannot consider applications from Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals for positions with a 2026 start date, as the ceiling defined under Article II.5 of the Associate Membership Agreement has been reached.
• By the Final date to receive applications, you have a master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of professional experience since graduation or a PhD with a maximum of 3 years of professional experience since graduation. You are not eligible with only a bachelor’s degree.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
