Location: Genf
Overview
PhD candidate in political science and international relations, focusing on State reconfiguration in urban Africa, 75% position within the department of Political Science and International Relations. The research will be conducted under the supervision of Prof. Didier Péclard as part of the VERTICAF project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Responsibilities- Develop and conduct original doctoral research in one of the thematic areas:
Urban Governance in Sub‑Saharan Africa;
State‑Society Relations in the Global South;
Modernization, Foreign Investment and Developmentalism;
Real Estate, Speculation and Finance;
Infrastructure and Urban Development;
Social Mobilizations and Resistance;
Urban Citizenships;
Postcolonial and Decolonial Approaches to Urban Practices in the Global South. - Produce a doctoral thesis, complete before the end of the first year and submit it officially to the Faculty.
- Actively participate in VERTICAF project activities, including workshops, international conferences, field research, and production of scientific and policy‑oriented publications.
- Engage in the doctoral program of the Conference of Universities of Western Switzerland and in the research activities of the Department of Political Science, Geneva School of Social Sciences, and Geneva Africa Lab at the Global Studies Institute.
- Master’s degree in Political Science, African Studies, Urban Studies, or an equivalent qualification.
- Strong interest and experience in state‑society relations in sub‑Saharan Africa.
- Proficient in qualitative methods and ethnographic approaches.
- Field knowledge of the Global South; research experience in urban areas of Africa is an asset.
- Excellent command of French and English; proficiency in Portuguese is an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Start date:
1 February 2027. Fixed‑term contract, 75% workload, first year renewable, maximum duration 4 years (48 months). Salary based on the State of Geneva scale funded by SNSF.
