The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) recognizes its engineers as valued resource and play a critical role in protecting public health and the environment. For that reason, we are now providing monetary recruitment incentives to new DNREC Engineers in accordance to our Recruitment Program Policy and Procedures.

Sign-On Bonus

Incentives are based on the position classification:

  • $4,000 for Engineer I
  • $5,000 for Engineer II
  • $6,000 for Engineer III
  • $7,000 for Engineer IV

Incentives are paid in two installments: one after three months of employment and the second after eighteen months from the initial date of employment. New employees accepting this recruitment bonus must commit to two consecutive years of employment with DNREC in the Engineer I-IV series. Must be a new hire to the State of Delaware or new to the Engineer classification series within the State of Delaware.

Summary Statement

The Drainage Program is comprised of the Tax Ditch Program and the Public Ditch Program. The Drainage Program Engineer provides engineering support and services to both branches. The Engineer reviews submitted plans and provides feedback as appropriate to ensure the integrity of tax ditch systems across the state are maintained. Additionally, the Engineer assists in the planning and development of tax ditch and drainage improvement projects to address drainage and tax ditch issues across the State.

Preferred Qualification

Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met.

  • Knowledge of the principles and foundation of computations included in hydrologic routing programs, including Hydro

    CAD.
Essential Functions
  • Draft, develop, and modify engineering designs, plans and specifications.
  • Review permit applications, blueprints and/or designs prepared by others to ensure compliance with specifications and regulations.
  • Apply principles and theories of science and mathematics to research and develop solutions to technical problems.
  • Plan and conduct field studies, surveys, research and development projects, inspections and/or investigations to collect data and ensure conformance to state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Test or evaluate materials, equipment, systems and facilities.
  • Plan and coordinate engineering projects.
  • Review, analyze, and report on the status of projects and/or regulatory conformance.
  • Develop cost estimates for project time and materials.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to technical staff.
Job Requirement Series Engineer I
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree (or an anticipated graduation date within 9 months) in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or official notice of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
Engineer II
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil or Environmental Engineering OR official notice of passing the FE examination in Civil or Environmental Engineering administered by NCEES.
  • At least one year experience in Civil or Environmental Engineering OR possession of a Master’s degree or higher in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
Engineer III
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Civil or Environmental Engineering administered by NCEES.
  • At least four years experience in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
