Join Our Team! DNREC is now offering sign‑on bonuses for engineers. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) recognizes its engineers as a highly valued resource and a critical part of protecting public health and the environment.
The program provides recruitment incentives as follows:
- $4,000 for Engineer I
- $5,000 for Engineer II
- $6,000 for Engineer III
- $7,000 for Engineer IV
Incentives are paid in two installments: one after three months of employment and the second after eighteen months from the initial date of employment. New employees accepting this bonus must commit to two consecutive years of employment with DNREC in the Engineer I‑IV series. Must be a new hire to the State of Delaware or new to the Engineer classification series within the State of Delaware.

The Drainage Program is comprised of the Tax Ditch Program and the Public Ditch Program. The Drainage Program Engineer provides engineering support and services to both branches. The engineer reviews submitted plans and provides feedback to ensure the integrity of tax ditch systems across the state, and assists in the planning and development of tax ditch and drainage improvement projects to address drainage and tax ditch issues.

- Drafts, develops and modifies engineering designs, plans and specifications.
- Reviews permit applications, blueprints and/or designs prepared by others to ensure compliance with specifications and regulations.
- Applies principles and theories of science and mathematics to research and develop solutions to technical problems.
- Plans and conducts field studies, surveys, research and development projects, inspections and/or investigations to collect data and ensure conformance to state/federal laws and regulations.
- Tests or evaluates materials, equipment, systems and facilities.
- Plans and coordinates engineering projects.
- Reviews, analyzes and reports on the status of projects and/or regulatory conformance.
- Develops cost estimates for project time and materials.
- Provides technical guidance and training to technical staff.
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree (or anticipated graduation within 9 months) in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or official notice of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination administered by NCEES.
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or official notice of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination in Civil or Environmental Engineering administered by NCEES.
- At least one year experience in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or possession of a Master’s degree or higher in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
- Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Civil or Environmental Engineering, administered by NCEES.
- At least four years experience in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
- Knowledge of engineering project management which includes planning, scheduling, staffing, coordinating, controlling, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on the status of engineering projects.
