Job Description & How to Apply Below

Sussex Conservation District is seeking a skilled, motivated engineer to join our Engineering and Design Services team. If you're passionate about water resource management and want to make a tangible impact on drainage and stormwater infrastructure throughout Sussex County, this is your opportunity. We offer a dynamic, family-friendly work environment where collaboration and professional growth are valued.

What You’ll Do

You’ll design drainage systems, stormwater management facilities, and water management infrastructure for Sussex Conservation District projects. Your work will combine technical engineering expertise with project management responsibilities—from coordinating with the DNREC Drainage Program to managing Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) projects and developing construction bid packages. You’ll perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, prepare engineering plans and specifications, design bank stabilization projects, and develop erosion and sediment control plans.

Expect a combination of office-based design work, field investigations at project sites, and coordination with contractors, municipalities, tax ditch organizations, and regulatory agencies.

What We’re Looking For

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related engineering field. Minimum 3–5 years of professional experience in drainage design, stormwater engineering, or water resources engineering. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, a valid Delaware driver’s license, and proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software (HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, Storm

CAD, or equivalent).
Preferred: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Delaware or ability to obtain within one year. Experience with public sector or conservation district drainage programs, DNREC regulatory coordination, and tax ditch systems. Certifications in stormwater management or erosion control (CPESC, CPSWQ, CESSWI) are a plus.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance with employer contribution
  • State of Delaware pension plan and 401(k) with employer match
  • Life insurance and short-term/long-term disability coverage
  • Generous paid time off and holidays
  • Professional development and licensure support
