  • All BVSPCA employees are responsible for providing excellent customer service to customers, animals, fellow staff, donor and all persons a BVSPCA staff member comes into contact with when working.

Animal Care

  • Acquires a working knowledge of all aspects of shelter operations, related animal laws and ordinances, and basic aspects of companion animal health and behavior issues.
  • Insure clients are positively greeted and assisted in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Performs, under the supervision of the Director of Operations, all shelter personnel reviews. Provides recommendations for hiring and dismissing of personnel
  • Keeps an open line of communication with the shelter office staff, kennel staff, medical staff and upper management
  • Manage workflow and day-to-day operations of the shelter. This includes managing staff and the animal population.
  • Print inventory report for all BVSPCA locations. Move animals through process quickly and efficiently.
  • Oversee and manage adoption, intakes and outcomes.
  • Make decisions proactively and with critical thinking.
  • Manage the customer service experience.
  • Be part of the core unit to trigger euthanasia. Manage or assist in managing the euthanasia process.
  • The Shelter Manager will alert the Director of Operations and/or the CEO if an animal should be considered for euthanasia.
  • Order supplies and check-in inventory. Assist in inventory management and control budget for inventory.
  • Assist in budgets and budgeting.
  • Create staff schedules, check timeclock, and submit payroll.
  • Provide feedback to staff through employee counseling and inform Director and/or HR Coordinator of these functions.
  • Manage workflow to create efficiencies. Create, maintain and organize shelter records.
  • Act as company liaison.
  • De-escalate situations when needed. Make decisions that reduce liability.
  • Manage the foster, rescue and transfer programs. Assist in managing other shelter programs such as the Safety Program, Enrichment, Behavior, Pets for Life, special events, Life Saving and/or other programs.
  • This position may be asked to perform any of the duties and responsibilities of the Animal Care Attendant or Adoptions and Customer Services staff member.
  • Performs other duties as defined by the Director of Operations.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain and create patient records by accurately recording treatments, examinations and test results on PetPoint software.
  • Assist with keeping inventory and ordering supplies.

  • Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practice.
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.
  • Maintain a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follow all pest and rodent control protocols.
Qualifications
  • A high school diploma with shelter experience or bachelor’s degree with animal handling experience.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs.
  • Ability to multitask under high-pressure situations.
  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the BVSPCA.
  • Experience with humane animal handling and restraint techniques of healthy, ill and feral animals.
  • Comfortable working in the shelter environment and willing to accommodate animals in the work place.
  • Computer literate and able to master PetPoint software as applicable to adoption operations.
  • Self-motivated and able to initiate and complete tasks.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in a shelter setting.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and standing for long periods of time.
  • Regular sitting at a computer workstation 2-4 hours per day to input adoption data.
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals.
  • Repeated lifting and carrying of animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Consistent exposure to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.
