Overview

Georgetown Community Hospital is currently searching for a Phlebotomist to join our Clinical Laboratory team. This is a PRN opportunity for someone looking for extra shifts or an entry into a hospital environment. Your High School Diploma, completion of an approved phlebotomy training course, and some healthcare work experience are the minimum qualifications.

You would have the opportunity to work with a strong and high-functioning clinical laboratory team that serves the needs of the hospital and also performs testing and other functions for physicians and organizations in the community. You will have the opportunity to learn, apply evidence-based practices, and contribute to patient care. We are a solid team of Med Techs and Phlebotomists performing services for the hospital and looking for someone to pick up shifts with us as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Performs venipuncture duties, urine collections, and various clerical duties including computer order entry/change on both HMS and ECW
  • Screens test requisitions for correct diagnosis, patient demographics and Medicare compliance
  • Verifies patient by reading patient identification
  • Obtains urine samples per protocol including Chain of Custody
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures
  • Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with nursing personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time
  • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed
  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, Clinic nurse or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
  • Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and Rural Health Clinic standards as defined by OIG
  • Enhances phlebotomy department and Laboratory by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
  • Scanning records into ECW medical records system
Qualifications

Education and Certifications

  • High school diploma
  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course (or equivalent)
  • Phlebotomy certification (where required) from an accredited agency
  • Some work experience working with patients in the healthcare field
  • Proficiency in the following: blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique from patients of all age groups, urine drug screen collections, breath/saliva alcohol testing, pediatric blood collections, and difficult draws. Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities would be acceptable subject to legal and regulatory requirements
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
