Job Summary

Provide appropriate, efficient, and timely pre‑hospital basic life support care and transportation of the sick and injured in accordance with local, state, national and Acadian Ambulance standards of practice.

Equipment

Ambulance; stretcher; folding stretcher; scoop stretcher; long and short spine boards and KED; spinal immobilization equipment; radios and computerized communications equipment; splinting devices; suction devices; bandaging materials; oxygen bottles and tubings; basic airway management devices; intravenous fluid therapy equipment; fire extinguisher; simple extrication devices; simple mechanics tools; blood pressure cuff and stethoscope; patient restraints; simple traction devices; other medical and related equipment items (not specifically listed may be added as new items are introduced).

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Conduct a careful examination of the patient for signs and symptoms of illness or injury and assist other medical personnel as necessary.
  • Administer prompt and efficient basic life support care within the limits of licensure or certification and in accordance with approved protocols prior to and during transport.
  • Provide careful handling of the patient to and from the ambulance.
  • Transport the patient safely and efficiently to the medical facility.
  • Transfer patient and care information to the receiving personnel at the destination.
  • Document all aspects of patient condition and treatment on EMS run reports and complete other required documentation.
  • Conduct regular unit inventory and equipment testing to ensure all equipment is present, clean, and in proper working order.
  • Place the ambulance and equipment back in service upon completion of transport.
  • Maintain full knowledge of the ambulance’s basic life support equipment and its proper use at all times.
  • Report all needed repairs to the proper maintenance departments and supervisors.
  • Use basic extrication tools and procedures to gain access to the patient, if necessary.
  • Control the patient’s surroundings to minimize further danger and manage bystanders.
  • Operate the ambulance safely, following company driving guidelines.
  • Follow all FCC regulations when communicating via electronic communications equipment.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings as scheduled.
  • Complete assigned station and grounds duties.
  • Order supplies and equipment from Central Supply.
  • Perform assigned ambulance duties such as washing, waxing, and cleaning.
  • Submit required company reports and logs and provide information to ambulance and supervisory personnel as necessary.
  • Precept EMT‑Basic students and new employees as directed (as approved Field Training Officer).
  • Meet and fulfill all qualifications, requirements, functions, and responsibilities of the Emergency Medical Technician – Basic job descriptions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
  • Stand, walk, sit, talk or hear for up to 2/3 of the shift.
  • Use hands to handle or feel.
  • Climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as required.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds (with 0–1/3 time) and up to 100 pounds (with 1/3–2/3 time).
  • Perform repetitive movements such as reaching and lifting intermittently.
Work Environment

Hazardous conditions may include hazardous materials calls, electrical emergencies, vehicular accidents, outdoor emergency settings, hurricanes, tornadoes, industrial accidents, and situations involving heavy equipment, chemicals, extreme temperatures, or other risks.

  • Wet, humid conditions; work near moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold and heat; risk of electrical shock; work with explosives; risk of radiation; vibration.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • National and/or State certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (per state requirements).
  • Current CPR certification (American Heart Association).
  • Current and valid state‑issued driver’s license (equivalent to a Louisiana Class D license).
  • Read, write, and communicate professionally and effectively with employees and managers.
