Senior Radiation Protection (RP) Technician - Plant Hatch

Southern Nuclear, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates eight nuclear reactors across Georgia and Alabama, including two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA.

We are looking for a committed, energized individual to join our Radiation Protection Department in a role that requires 18.1 ANSI – 1971 qualified senior RP experience.

Requirements

Two years of radiation protection related work experience (4,000 hours over a minimum of 80 weeks, including 1 year of nuclear power plant experience) is required. Candidates must also pass the EEI Technical Occupations Selection System Test.

Education / Equivalent Preferences
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or Physical Science (Biology, Microbiology, Physics, Chemistry, or Math)
  • Associate's degree in Radiation Protection Technology (preferred)
Summary of Duties
  • Monitor radiation controlled areas using fixed and portable survey instruments to evaluate contamination and airborne radiation levels and establish dose rates for job coverage.
  • Store, issue, and test respiratory protection equipment.
  • Assist in or lead repair and calibration of fixed and portable radiation survey instruments when required.
  • Provide radiation protection coverage to plant operations and maintenance personnel.
  • Provide radiological evaluation of area decontamination activity.
  • Support plant dosimetry program as needed.
  • Support radioactive waste shipments as required.
  • Implement process control programs.
  • Review work packages, project exposure for jobs, evaluate shielding needs, and brief technicians and workers.
  • Perform ALARA job reviews and maintain a job history file for ALARA packages.
  • Track ALARA suggestions and take necessary action.
  • Pursue methods for improving the ALARA program and increase awareness across plant groups.
  • Document plant areas photographically for future ALARA job planning.
  • Serve on the on‑shift Emergency Response Organization.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Experience in a technical radiation protection program.
  • Daily safety-focused attitude and commitment to zero accidents.
  • Ability to enforce radiation protection requirements and stop work when compliance is jeopardized.
  • Strong knowledge of radiation protection fundamentals.
  • Proficiency with personal computers.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of nuclear power plant procedures, regulations, systems, and processes is a plus.
  • Interest in mentoring less experienced radiation protection personnel.
  • Requirement to meet background screening & security, company physical requirements, and respirator qualification.
  • Successful completion of the Technical Occupations Selection System (TECH) test.
Compensation

This position is covered by a collective bargaining unit and will pay $56.19/hr.
