Ruffed Grouse Research Technicians
University of Georgia – Warnell Research – North Georgia Region. The position is a Temporary Technical Paraprofessional (FLSA Non‑Exempt). The anticipated start date is 03/02/2026 and the posting remains open until filled.
Position SummaryWe are seeking three field technicians to conduct Ruffed Grouse surveys across North Georgia. Responsibilities include standard roadside grouse surveys, searching for grouse drumming logs to support genetic analysis, and operating Automated Recording Units (ARUs). Technicians will also handle set‑up, take‑down, and monitoring of ARUs, enter data daily, and may be asked to transcribe acoustic data. Expect very early mornings to mid‑afternoon work schedules, with field housing and a work vehicle provided.
PrimaryDuties
- Perform bird point‑count surveys
- Operate song meters
- Search for grouse fecal samples
- Enter data (field and acoustic)
- Travel to field sites
- B.S. in Wildlife Ecology or related field (working toward or completed)
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record
- Experience conducting forest bird surveys and working independently in remote, off‑road locations
- Strong observational and listening skills; ability to navigate using GPS and Google Maps
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to follow directions independently
Endure long workdays beginning before sunrise, drive long distances, hike through dense forests, navigate steep terrain, and work in hot, humid conditions. Will need to carry up to 25 lbs. of field equipment and may encounter ticks, chiggers, poison ivy, and occasionally rattlesnakes/copperheads.
