CDL Trimmer (All Levels) – Townsend Company
The CDL Trimmer series focuses on maintaining trees for public safety. Responsibilities increase with each class, from entry‑level tree removal to supervisory and training roles.
Position Description Trimmer D/4th Class (Entry Level)Under supervision, maintains trees by pruning, cutting, removing, and caring for trees. May be exposed to hazards such as traffic, falling limbs, and energized power lines. Requires close attention to detail and adherence to safety guidelines.
Trimmer C/3rd Class (Mid‑Level)Performs all tasks of the D/4th Class plus additional duties such as identifying tree species and assessing tree failure risk. Receives on‑the‑job training and oversees a crew.
Trimmer B/2nd Class (Mid‑Level with Supervision)Provides and receives training, directs crew, and performs all tasks of the C/3rd Class. Involved in crew supervision and additional risk assessment.
Trimmer A/1st Class (Lead Level)Leads crews and serves as the top‑level authority, providing training and direction when the foreperson is absent. Performs all duties of the lower classes.
Duties and Responsibilities (All Levels)- Tree pruning, removal, brush chipping, and stump grinding
- Use of climbing hooks, belts, ropes, and ladders
- Operation and servicing of equipment such as hydraulic tools, power tools, chippers, and sprayers
- Cutting away dead and excess branches
- Spraying to treat diseased or unhealthy trees, including mixing chemicals and calibrating spray equipment
- Roles and responsibilities may change with or without notice
- Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Must have a CDL
- Semi‑skilled in mechanics
- Ability to complete a proficiency test (climbing, knot tying, chainsaw maintenance)
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record per company requirements
- May need to pass a DOT physical examination to obtain the CDL
- Knowledge of essential job functions and responsibilities
- Attention to detail, organizational skills, and strong communication skills
- Problem‑solving skills
- 12‑month physical requirements of the position
- Pass all drug and alcohol screens as required by company policy and DOT regulations
- 18 years of age or older; 21 if CDL is required
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Experience with tree‑care maintenance program including equipment such as stump grinders, chippers, and bucket trucks
