Positions reports to direct supervision.
Responsibilities- Learn Plant Protection Programs.
- Inspect live plant growers and dealers (sod farms, nurseries, tree farms, etc.) to ensure compliance with state regulations and proper maintenance of plants.
- Verify compliance with Department‑issued agreements and certifications for interstate and international export of plants, fruits, vegetables, etc.
- Perform state and federal phytosanitary certification inspections as requested.
- Perform apiary inspections as requested.
- Monitor crops and/or environs for specific agricultural pests.
- Participate in invasive species detection and eradication activities.
Assigned to the following counties: CALHOUN, BAKER, CLAY, DOUGHERTY, EARLY, LEE, MILLER, MITCHELL, QUITMAN, RANDOLPH, TERRELL. Applicant must reside in this county or the surrounding area, or be willing to relocate.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, biological sciences, or a directly related field OR ownership or management experience in an agricultural or horticultural business.
- Working knowledge of Windows computer operating systems and applications.
High school diploma/GED and one (1) year of experience in the area of assignment; or two (2) years of college, which included 12 semester hours or 20 quarter hours in chemistry or life sciences.
Physical Demands- Work outdoors in varied terrain, including plant nurseries, greenhouses, agricultural production areas, and apiaries for extended periods of time.
- Intermittent walking, squatting, kneeling, and driving.
- Must be able to lift 50‑lb boxes.
- Travel required.
- May be responsible for providing transportation to work sites.
