Start a Career in Utility Vegetation Management

Georgia Right of Way, a Utility Line Clearance Contractor, is seeking motivated individuals for full-time Groundman positions.

No previous tree trimming or utility line clearance experience is required. Previous experience performing outdoor, physically demanding, or other hands-on work is strongly preferred. This is an entry-level position for individuals who are willing to work hard, work outdoors year-round in varying weather and field conditions, learn a skilled trade, and build a career in the utility vegetation management industry.

What Does a Groundman Do?

Groundmen provide essential support to the tree trimming crew from the ground. Job responsibilities include:

  • Dragging, cutting, and chipping brush and fallen limbs
  • Operating a wood chipper
  • Assisting trimmers by sending up tools and equipment
  • Assisting with roping and rigging operations
  • Using a chainsaw to cut brush, limbs, and other material
  • Raking and cleaning the work area
  • Assisting with daily equipment inspection and maintenance
  • Following company safety procedures and instructions
  • Working as part of a crew to safely and efficiently complete utility right-of-way clearing work

Georgia Right of Way provides ongoing safety, skills, and job-specific training to help Groundmen perform their work safely and develop the knowledge needed to succeed in the utility vegetation management industry.

Groundman training includes, but is not limited to:
  • Equipment safety, operation, and maintenance
  • Roadside work zone safety and traffic control
  • CPR certification and First Aid training
  • Class A CDL and commercial vehicle training
  • Chainsaw safety, operation, maintenance, and sharpening
  • Wood chipper safety, operation, and maintenance
  • Knot tying, roping, and rigging
  • Tree identification and hazard recognition
  • Electrical hazard awareness
  • Ongoing job-specific safety and skills training

CDL Progression

A valid driver's license is required
.

New employees are required to obtain their Class A Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP-A) within their first 60 days of employment
.

Georgia Right of Way assists employees in completing the required Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT), provides commercial vehicle training, and assists with preparation and scheduling for the CDL road test.

Employees receive a pay increase upon obtaining their CLP-A.

Obtaining a Class A CDL is an important part of continued advancement within the company.

Work Schedule

Our crews typical work four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday
, generally from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM
. Work schedules are subject to change based on customer and operational needs.

Georgia Right of Way also provides emergency and storm restoration services. Employees must be willing and available to work overtime, extended hours, irregular schedules, and storm work when needed
.
