Job Overview
Under the supervision of the Container Yard Manager or the manager's designee, the Yard Foreman performs a variety of duties related to the accurate and efficient movement of container chassis, cargo, and terminal equipment.
Job Information- Job Title: Yard Foreman - ARP
- Location: Garden City Terminal
- FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Upholds the values of the GPA to promote Safety, Integrity, Respect, Community, Creativity and Opportunity. Promotes a safe work environment by participating in safety initiatives and reporting unsafe conditions and behaviors.
- Works with Container Operations management staff to ensure that vessel, yard, and Control Center operations are handled in the most efficient and safe manner.
- Analyzes and assigns space requirements for vessel and yard operations.
- Supervises the special handling of out-of-gauge containers.
- Works with Operations Administrative Supervisor/ Planners to coordinate orders so the work can be performed in the most productive manner.
- Assists in training and directing employees on the safest and most productive ways of handling containers/chassis/cargo.
- Maintains a working knowledge of yard locations and traffic patterns.
- Works as a team leader to complete all work orders accurately and efficiently.
- Maintains the inventory of all container handling equipment and technological devices.
- Assists in the reduction of overtime hours.
- Operates container handling equipment if required.
- Maintains good housekeeping practices.
- Performs clerical duties related to road truck receiving and delivery of containers.
- Interacts and provides customer service with the Stevedoring community in the placement of containers and the loading and discharging of vessels.
- Checks for damage and/or exceptions on cargo. Records and reports same.
- Guides or directs subordinates or peers working within his/her jurisdiction.
- Candidate should have some knowledge of yard operations and equipment handling processes and procedures.
- Must have knowledge of the capacities and functions of all types of container/chassis handling equipment being used in the yard.
- Must have a working knowledge of GPA’s Terminal Operating system and support equipment (i.e., Radio Frequency Unit and like equipment).
- Legible penmanship and accuracy of figures are required.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work overtime, shiftwork, weekends, and holidays when required.
- Ability to carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to supervise, communicate effectively, and train employees with positivity and professionalism.
- Must have the ability to be trained as new technology is introduced into the workplace.
- Some prior experience operating heavy equipment (Required).
- Required High School Diploma or equivalent.
- TWIC - Transportation Worker Identification Credential (Required Upon Hire).
- Driver's License - Valid state driver's license (Required Upon Hire).
