Temporary Highway Maintenance Worker – Gering & Surrounding Areas

State of Nebraska is hiring temporary weekend/full‑time winter maintenance workers to provide additional income while helping keep the highways safe. The position is open until March 31, 2026 and may involve up to 40 hours per week, depending on weather.

$21.47 per hour or $19.94 per hour for those without a CDL. Qualified CDL holders will earn $21.47 per hour.

• Assist with winter operations and snow removal.
• Operate heavy equipment for road maintenance.
• Perform tree trimming.
• Respond to highway emergencies.
• Safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload equipment, materials, supplies, and hazardous materials within weight limits.
• Spread and tamp surfacing materials.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
• For senior positions: valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements required within 60 days of employment.
• Preferred:
  Class A or B CDL and experience operating heavy equipment.

• Safely move, drag, and lift 35 lbs frequently, up to 60 lbs occasionally without assistance, and 90+ lbs infrequently with assistance.
• Ability to climb, bend, and stoop in outdoor temperature extremes and work around high-speed traffic.
• Must be reachable outside scheduled work hours for highway emergencies.
