Under the general supervision of the Natural Resources Manager, performs urban forestry maintenance focused on woodland, wetland, and public space resources, to include native and invasive plant control that are in line with CAPRA standards. Maintains the City’s urban forest in coordination with the City Tree Plan to ensure dead, damaged, and diseased trees are removed, including planting, pruning, and stump removal.
Plans and assigns tasks. Provides technical assistance to employees. Monitors work in progress and inspects completed work for compliance to City standards and the Parks Maintenance Plan.
- Plans the work of natural resources technicians engaged in performing urban forestry, such as removal of leaf, limb, and litter; maintenance of various kinds of fences; implementation of landscape improvement projects to enhance park aesthetics; blowing hard surfaces; pruning or removing hazard trees according to the City Tree Plan; and any other routine daily maintenance tasks required to alleviate park liabilities and hazards.
- Plans, schedules and assigns daily work projects and reports on daily and weekly schedules to the Natural Resources Manager.
- Supervises employees to include evaluating work performance, park assessment scores, safety training, and compliance with the Natural Resource Management Plan standards.
- Supervises the upkeep and maintenance of urban forestry spaces to include trail maintenance, outdoor classrooms, signage, tree planting, native plant planting, and erosion control.
- Operates and supervises the safe operations of tools and equipment used in park and tree maintenance including but not limited to chainsaws, front‑end loaders, lifts, and tractors equipped with various attachments.
- Ensures tree maintenance equipment and all tools are properly maintained and monitors inventory levels for supplies and equipment, ensuring timely restocking and replacements.
- Serves as a Tier 1 employee during inclement weather events to ensure parks and public spaces are safe for City use.
- Provides guidance and training to ensure excellence everyday standards while producing A+ results.
- Instructs technicians on proper work procedures, dispensing and mixing of chemicals and other materials.
- Recommends measures to improve department operations and suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of the department.
- Upon approval of the Natural Resources Manager, orders supplies from the city warehouse or various vendors and maintains an inventory of supplies and materials on hand.
- Resolves citizens’ inquiries and complaints within 48 hours for urgent complaints and 5‑days for non‑emergency complaints.
- May assist with other department activities as needed before, during, and after extreme weather events.
- Assist with department special events by completing work orders and event day operations, as needed.
- Perform related tasks as required.
