General Description

Plans, organizes, implements, and delivers the instructional program in the content area of assignment at the state school for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent of felony offenses. Work involves assessing students, providing individualized competency‑based instruction, and maintaining a positive teaching/learning environment in which youth are guided and encouraged to develop and fulfill their academic potential.

Essential Functions
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities that facilitate an active learning environment.
  • Observe and evaluate youth’s performance and development; provide appropriate feedback on work; encourage and monitor progress of individual students.
  • Identify the learning needs of students and interpret assessment information.
  • Select and use instructional resources and methods to meet varying needs.
  • Communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of youth’s progress and development; update records as required by laws and agency policies.
  • Provide educational services to potentially aggressive/combative youth in a correctional setting with a wide variety of temperaments.
  • React quickly and effectively to verbally and physically defuse hazardous, combative, volatile situations on an as needed basis.
  • Keep up to date with developments in the subject area, teaching resources, and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans.
  • Monitor outcomes for racial, ethnic, and gender disparities and take action to address identified disparities.
  • Perform a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures; report safety hazards and correct hazards when possible.
  • Complete required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames; attend work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and a valid secondary Texas Teacher Certification in the specified subject assignment area. Must be highly qualified in all areas of teaching assignment. Pre‑employment conditions include an acceptable drug test result; fingerprinting and criminal records check; and a fitness‑for‑duty assessment which may include both physical and behavior evaluations. Failure to maintain required licensure/certification will result in termination of employment.

Obtain and maintain certification in TJJD’s Use of Force techniques, which requires physical restraint of juveniles. This position is subject to mandatory pre‑employment drug testing and any offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results from a drug screen conducted for the agency.
