The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is the independent law enforcement agency dedicated to maintaining the safety and security of the Texas juvenile justice system. The OIG investigates criminal allegations involving TJJD juveniles, employees, facilities, contractors, volunteers, or programs within the Texas juvenile justice system. OIG inspectors general oversee criminal investigations and possess all the powers and duties granted to peace officers under the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.

Specialized inspectors investigate allegations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation by staff against justice‑involved youth at both the state and county levels. The OIG also provides security at gatehouses, controls ingress and egress of all personnel and vehicles, detects and intercepts contraband, operates the 24‑hour Incident Reporting Center (IRC), and compiles reports for the TJJD board, legislature, and other state agencies. Investigation and compliance monitoring form core responsibilities.

• Conduct investigative law enforcement work, including planning, organizing, and conducting investigations on agency property or involving agency interests.
• Interview witnesses, collect and evaluate evidence, and prepare detailed reports for legal and administrative action.
• Obtain and execute warrants, assist other law enforcement agencies, conduct undercover investigations, and perform arrests and facility security duties, including escapee pursuit.
• Document investigative activity, maintain records of cases, evidence, contraband, and property in compliance with applicable laws and retention policies.
• Conduct routine, random, or specifically requested searches and inspections of facility premises, persons, and vehicles entering or on premises.
• Coordinate with departmental staff to meet objectives, share information, identify operational concerns and trends, and recommend improvements.
• Collect and analyze reports of serious injury, escape, youth‑on‑youth assaults, and attempted suicide; issue reports regarding non‑compliance with related state laws and agency rules.
• Provide training to others and may be assigned a canine partner for contraband detection and investigation.
• Perform all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures, report safety hazards, and complete required documentation for accidents or injuries within specified time frames.
• Attend work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies with potential statewide travel and on‑call requirements.
