Provides supervision and direct care for youth in a residential correctional facility. Aims to help youth progress in learning and applying methods to manage stress, trauma, and behavior. Implements intervention strategies to aid in behavior correction, ensures safe environments, and employs security measures when necessary. Engages youth with understanding of developmental needs, maintains healthy relationships and boundaries, and fosters a consistent and transparent schedule.
EssentialDuties
- Engages in competency-based training in techniques needed to coach youth under the Texas Model of trauma‑informed corrections.
- Holds youth accountable in ways that fit the level of behavior, helping them learn socially acceptable responses.
- Uses good judgment to determine when safety is at risk and higher levels of intervention are required.
- Helps youth identify responses to stress, fear, and triggers; works with them to increase emotional self‑regulation skills.
- Models appropriate self‑regulation skills and remains calm during stress and crisis.
- Provides basic knowledge of each youth’s treatment plan and supports skill development to meet goals.
- Coaches youth on resolving conflict with peers and staff as appropriate.
- Participates in the Youth Service Team and contributes to each youth’s treatment plan.
- Provides a predictable schedule for youth, including warnings and prompts for transitions, and exercises independent judgment when adjustments are needed.
- Monitors and implements youth activities, programs, and behaviors on an individual and group basis.
- Observes and reports significant behavioral and treatment‑related conditions to staff.

Work Hours and SchedulingPosition may require on‑call duties and occasional overtime beyond 40 hours per week. Occasional travel may be required.

Pre‑Service Training Academy RequirementNewly hired or rehired JCOs who have been separated for more than 18 months must attend the pre‑service training academy and complete on‑the‑job training full‑time. Employees returning within 18 months of separation are placed in full‑time status without academy attendance.
