We’re looking for a Senior Economist to join us and apply advanced competition economics to high-profile market assessments, enforcement activity and strategic regulatory design.

We’re offering a permanent opportunity within our Strategy, Economics, Research and Net Zero Directorate, joining a respected and growing economics community at the heart of regulatory decision-making. You’ll work on complex, high-impact projects that shape market frameworks and influence how competition operates across the energy sector. As part of our Analysis Profession, you will also have the opportunity to contribute across directorates, supporting cross‑organisation priorities and broadening your impact.
This is a role where your expertise will directly inform major policy and enforcement decisions, embedding rigorous economic thinking into our strategic direction. You’ll help shape market studies and competition cases, contribute to analytical best practice and strengthen our reputation as a leader in regulatory economics. Working collaboratively with policy, legal and other technical experts, you’ll ensure that economic analysis sits at the centre of robust, evidence‑based regulation.
We’re looking for someone with a strong academic background in economics and practical experience applying economic analysis to real‑world markets. You’ll bring the ability to design and deliver high‑quality analysis, critically assess evidence and communicate complex insights clearly to varied audiences. You will also be confident building effective relationships and shaping debate across internal and external stakeholders.

We have a critical purpose to embed robust competition economics at the heart of energy market regulation, ensuring markets work effectively for consumers while supporting the transition to Net Zero. In this role, you will help safeguard fair competition, strengthen market design and ensure economic evidence underpins the decisions that shape Britain’s energy future.
Key Responsibilities- Undertake robust quantitative and qualitative analysis informing sound advice on key policy decisions.
- Assess the reliability of evidence, including that gathered by more junior team members and give objective advice.
- Provide clear and concise drafting for external and internal audiences, including contributions to briefings, internal decision documents, and consultations. Ensure robust project management and quality assurance processes are in place to deliver high‑quality and timely analysis.
- Ensure effective project planning and timely delivery of outputs.
- Constructive working relationships established with internal and external stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively across team boundaries.
- Application of technical expertise in competition economics to carry out market studies, competition enforcement cases and provide robust recommendations.
- Provision of expertise to individuals and projects to ensure that competition economics considerations are applied appropriately and effectively, providing guidance and support staff to consider new and innovative methods.
