Job Overview
Role can be based in any of the following UK offices:
London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh. We have an exciting opportunity for a Fire Engineer (External Wall Assessments) to join our market‑leading UK team.
The applicant will play a critical role in improving fire life safety for external wall construction in residential buildings post‑Grenfell. You will work with teams across the UK to support clients rapidly and deliver high‑standard reports.
Responsibilities- Review architectural drawings and specifications for external wall design relevant to fire life safety and compliance with Building Regulations, Fire Safety Order and PAS 9980.
- Perform on‑site inspections of new building work to ensure compliance with the design package and relevant building regulations.
- Conduct intrusive survey inspections of existing buildings to verify construction, identify products/materials, cavity barrier and fire stopping installation.
- Carry out risk‑based assessments of existing buildings following the PAS 9980 methodology.
- Review building fire strategy key principles via desktop review of fire strategy reports, fire risk assessment reports, building plans or on‑site inspections.
- Produce clear and comprehensive reports outlining assessments.
- Support the development of Fire Safety Strategy reports with input on risk of fire spread over external walls and Building Regulation B4(1).
- Manage project resources.
- Assist with quality assurance processes as required.
- Manage own client base and exceed client expectations.
- Update the technical knowledge base.
- Support fee proposals, business development and marketing material preparations.
- Provide CPD presentations when required.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of guidance and product literature and share with the wider organisation.
- Travel to client sites for inspections and meetings; overnight stays may be required.
- Knowledge of facades and building envelope systems (cladding, curtain wall glazing, render, brickwork, custom solutions).
- Knowledge of construction methods and fire performance of external wall materials, cavity barriers, fire stops and fire breaks.
- Knowledge of passive fire protection products and their field of application.
- Knowledge of waterproofing systems and their interface with vertical façade.
- Experience conducting intrusive external wall surveys on a range of high‑rise residential, office buildings, large retail complexes, historic buildings.
- Ability to read architectural drawings and specifications.
- Ability to author technical reports with engineering judgement.
- Understanding of fire safety design legislation and guidance for a variety of buildings (Building Regulations, Approved Document B, Fire Safety Order, PAS 9980).
- Knowledge of the fire risk assessment process and risk identification in the built environment.
- Knowledge of refurbishment schemes and managing contractors on‑site.
- Ability to work at heights on scaffolding, elevated work platforms, building maintenance units.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word for report writing.
- Capacity to work independently and manage workload.
- A desire to mentor and manage junior professionals and Design Engineers.
