Our client is a major Building and Civil Engineering Contractor operating throughout the UK. Due to an increasing workload, they now have a requirement for an experienced Senior Estimator to join the team. The role will be based out of their Glasgow office and some travel to sites will be required.

Responsibilities

The Senior Estimator shall be responsible for Pre‑Construction Estimating, working closely and directly with internal and external clients, other disciplines and teams from project inception, and be accountable for all financial and estimating aspects of the projects.

  • To procure contracts and budgets for the Company in accordance with the Business Strategy.
  • To ensure highly competitive, carefully resourced and analysed tender costs and prepare quality submissions to clients.
  • To work within Frameworks evaluating negotiated contracts and be aware of company targets for new orders, aiming to improve them with profitable successful bids.
  • To prepare and review tenders being processed in the Estimating department.
  • To liaise with the Head of Estimating, Commercial Director and Finance department on contractual terms, bonds and insurances.
  • To liaise with Senior Management and obtain their input into tenders, offers and proposals.
  • To arrange handover meetings and formally hand‑over new contracts.
  • To assist the Head of Estimating/Pre‑Construction Director in developing new contacts and clients.
  • To lead negotiations in relation to tenders, offers and proposals, when directed by the Head of Estimating/Pre‑Construction Director.
  • Sound knowledge of Estimating on large‑scale building projects.
  • Price from first principles, procure subs/materials quotes and prepare tender settlement sheets to main contractor’s Prelims; take ownership from receiving the documents through to adjudication of tenders.
  • Meet and engage with key Supply Chain during the tender process period.
  • Fulfil the role of Senior Estimator on projects, managing all estimating elements and interfacing with suppliers, clients and across commercial, operations and project functions.
  • Understand the corporate and contract‑specific estimating procedures and carry out all work in accordance with these.
  • Prepare estimates from conception through to detailed estimates for identified projects within the company.
  • Assist in training estimating staff and graduates working in or seconded to the department for a period of time.
  • Understand complex engineering drawings and designs and translate these into build needs, sequence and timings.
  • Assess and record the likely competition when tendering.
  • Liaise with procurement in dealing with suppliers and subcontractors at the tender stage to obtain the most competitive prices and secure firm quotes for significant materials and subcontract items.
  • Request further information from Client/Design Team and arrange meetings if required.
  • Attend handover meetings and brief team on tender bid.
  • Run multiple projects at any one time at different stages, cost plan, design feasibility and competitive tender.
  • Produce estimates and cost plans from concept plans and specification.
  • Maintain excellent construction technology knowledge.
  • Work on Conquest Estimating System including On‑Screen Take Off.
  • Maintain database management, design and cost control, subcontract analysis and comparisons.
Qualifications Essential
  • Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing technical publications.
Desirable
  • Educated to degree or HND level with relevant work experience.
Experience
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate previous experience in a similar role.
  • Excellent communication and numeracy skills.
