The Appointed Person (AP) is responsible for the planning, organisation, control, and execution of lifting operations under contract lift arrangements. The AP ensures all lifting activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with legal and industry standards.

Planning & Control
- Plan all lifting operations in accordance with LOLER, BS 7121, and company procedures
- Produce and approve lift plans, risk assessments, and method statements (RAMS)
- Select suitable lifting equipment, cranes, and accessories for each operation
- Define lifting methods, crane positions, load weights, radii, and ground bearing pressures
Site & Operational Duties
- Attend site to survey lifting areas, identifying hazards and constraints
- Liaise with clients, principal contractors, site managers, and lifting teams
- Ensure lifting operations are supervised by a competent Lift Supervisor
- Brief lifting teams prior to operations and ensure all personnel understand the lift plan
- Suspend lifting operations where unsafe conditions exist
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all lifting equipment has valid certification, inspections, and thorough examinations
- Confirm competence and certification of crane operators, slingers, signallers, and supervisors
- Monitor weather conditions and environmental factors affecting lifting operations
- Investigate lifting incidents, near misses, and implement corrective actions
Contract Lifting Responsibilities
- Act as the duty holder for lifting operations under contract lift agreements
- Ensure contractual obligations and scope of lifting responsibilities are clearly defined
- Maintain records of lift plans, permits, and lifting documentation
- CPCS / NPORS Appointed Person qualification (or equivalent)
- Strong working knowledge of LOLER 1998 and BS 7121
- Experience planning complex and high-risk lifts
- Ability to read technical drawings and calculate load weights and radii
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and safety-focused mindset
- Confident decision-making under pressure
- Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
