PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £52,300 – £67,100 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Purpose of the Role

This is a rare opportunity to work in the heart and soul of the BBC Scotland newsroom. We’re looking for an Assistant Editor to help lead our operation across all our platforms. You’d have a primary focus on planning next‑day and future stories, be expected to run our news desk on any given day, and be a key figure in our overall strategy to serve and attract audiences, wherever they consume news.

Key Responsibilities and Impact
  • Plan effective next‑day and future story‑led news coverage across all platforms
  • Assign story leads, stories and journalistic deployments
  • Line‑manage and editorially manage people with varying levels of seniority and expertise
  • Form effective relationships with multiple colleagues and teams, around the newsroom and the country.
  • Model a positive working ethos
Your Skills and Experience

Essential criteria:

  • Experience or demonstrable ability to manage and lead people.
  • High level communicator, sound character and positive disposition.
  • A grasp of the BBC Scotland news operation and its strategy.
  • A full understanding of Scottish news and politics, as well as an awareness of the UK and global news context.
  • A command of the BBC’s editorial guidelines.
