Job Purpose

To play a significant role in the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment in Special Care Dentistry. You will work collaboratively as part of a large team to develop and deliver on areas of dental education that require a multidisciplinary approach. You will be expected to participate fully in management and administration of the Dental School, including contributing to agenda setting and supporting the development of strategic priorities at a senior level.

The primary focus of the role is Learning & Teaching. In addition, you will be expected to perform the duties of an Honorary Consultant in Special Care Dentistry.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and delivery of a range of teaching, assessment and feedback activities in Special Care Dentistry, promoting scholarly learning for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Work collaboratively with a large team to design, develop and deliver teaching, assessment and feedback that requires input from multiple disciplines.
  • Develop creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, ensuring the quality of educational opportunities is continually enhanced.
  • Participate in the ongoing development and review of both undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.
  • Supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate student research projects.
  • Provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
  • Undertake research and other scholarly activities relevant to the delivery of dental education, publishing outcomes in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Contribute at a senior level to management within the Dental School and undertake senior administrative duties associated with the delivery of teaching and the academic management of the Dental School.
  • Undertake the clinical and administrative duties as an Honorary Consultant in Special Care Dentistry, as agreed in annual joint University / NHS job planning.
  • Undertake undergraduate teaching activity at Outreach Centres located outside the Dental School & Hospital if required.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/Qualifications Essential
  • A1 Registrable qualification with the General Dental Council; must have full registration prior to start date.
  • A2 Completion of UK specialist training pathway in Special Care Dentistry or equivalent.
  • A3 Eligible for inclusion on the GDC Specialist List in Special Care Dentistry; must be registered with the GDC on the Specialist List prior to start date.
  • A4 Master’s degree or Higher Research Degree.
Desirable
  • B1 Fellowship in Dental Surgery, MFDS from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges or equivalent.
  • B2 Hold, be working towards or willing to complete a certificate in Academic Practice, or equivalent learning and teaching qualification.

  • C1 Ability to deliver research‑informed teaching.
  • C2 Ability to deliver high‑quality evidence‑based clinical care.
  • C3 Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
  • C4 Good IT skills including delivery of technology‑enhanced learning and teaching.

Experience Essential
  • E1 Experience of design and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Special Care Dentistry.
  • E2 Experience in administration of dental teaching programmes.
  • E3 Experience of management processes in an academic environment.
  • E4 Experience in academic assessment of dental students.
  • E5 Experience of mentoring students and/or staff.
  • E6 Evidence of continuing scholarship.
  • E7 Established quality research record, educational research or Learning, Teaching & Scholarship academic activity record.
  • E8 Record of publications in peer‑reviewed journals or other Learning, Teaching & Scholarship academic outputs.
  • E9 Evidence of current experience of delivering comprehensive dental care under general anaesthetic and dentist‑led sedation.
  • E10 Evidence of recent delivery of quality improvement projects and/or clinical audit.
