Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist

The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday 9-5.

This is a Fixed term post for 8 months.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHS GGC) invites applications for a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest in Glaucoma. This is a fixed term post available from September 2026. The successful candidate will join a large, progressive ophthalmology service delivering care across multiple hospital sites.

The provisional job plan includes clinical sessions Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital and Stobhill Hospital.

This is a 10 PA post, comprising of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) and administrative sessions. The job plan and location of duties may vary over the course of the contract period, in line with service requirements.

Applicants must hold full GMC Registration with a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. UK trained applicants should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once CESR is awarded.

Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. Up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional outpatient and/or procedure sessions or management activity.

Additional Non DCC (up to 2 PA’s in total – Inclusive of 1 core SPA plus 1 additional non DCC can be negotiated and agreed between the successful candidate and Management depending on the time required to support professional activities and the needs of the service.

All newly qualified Consultants are initially offered a minimum of 1 Core Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) which includes CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning and management meetings. This will be reviewed within 6 months (or earlier if required) of appointment and revised upwards if additional responsibilities are agreed.

Expertise in the management of glaucoma patients

Evidence of leadership skills and service development

Evidence of publications and/or presentations are desirable

Experience in delivering formal and informal teaching and training

Commitment to Education and workforce development.

Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams

Strong organisational skills

Willingness to work flexibly to support strategic aims of NHS GGC including development of competence based roles for non-medical staff.

This may include supporting patient pathways, providing clinical advice, cross-site working or appropriate virtual clinical activity. Any involvement will be discussed and agreed, reflecting clinical governance, post requirements and wider service needs across NHSGGC
