We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Lectureship in Haematology with a particular interest in blood cancers/malignant haematology, tenable in the School of Cancer Sciences, University of Glasgow. This is a fixed‑term post (up to 6 years, or until six months after obtaining CCT, whichever is soonest). The funding is through NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and is part of the SCREDS scheme.
You will hold MRCP (UK) or equivalent and have completed general professional training. It is expected that you will already hold a higher research degree (MD/PhD); if not, you will be supported to develop a project, pursue funding and execute research suitable for a postgraduate degree.
The successful candidate will be appointed at the appropriate level of Specialty Trainee and will enter the West of Scotland Higher Training Programme in Haematology. You must already have a UK national training number in Haematology at the time of taking up the post. The post is based within the School of Cancer Sciences, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS).
Clinical training will focus on completing MRCPath and CCT, while providing an exceptional opportunity for combined academic training.
Clinical training will cover all aspects of the Haematology Curriculum with opportunities to develop subspecialty expertise in haematological oncology. Training will take place at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Royal Hospital for Children and Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Research training will take place in the world‑class academic environment of the University of Glasgow with opportunities in leukaemia, stem cells, developmental therapeutics, early‑phase trials, pre‑clinical blood cancer models, therapy resistance, energetic stress, tumour microenvironment and data analysis.
Job PurposeThe academic aim of the Lectureship is to support research development, including an MD or PhD where appropriate, to submit intermediate fellowship applications by the end of the Lectureship and to grow towards an independent academic career.
Main Duties and Responsibilities Research- Develop a research programme under supervision of senior investigators in the School of Cancer Sciences, in basic, translational and/or clinical science related to malignant haematology.
- Plan, design and implement projects with collaborators; contribute to and submit grant applications and publish papers.
- Contribute to delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, including seminars, tutorials and clinical skills.
- Teach on the undergraduate haematology course, SSC, and intercalated PhD programmes.
- Supervise postgraduate taught or research courses and assist with assessments, including OSSCEs and examination marking.
The Lecturer will support administrative duties related to research and general running of the School of Cancer Sciences or Glasgow Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre as directed by their supervisor.
Clinical DutiesClinical duties will be arranged in consultation with the Training Programme Director in Haematology. The 80:20 split between clinical and academic activity is flexible and may vary over time; a 60:20 split is possible for part‑time trainees. Clinical training will focus on completion of CCT.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Essential- MB ChB or equivalent and full registration with the General Medical Council.
