Job Purpose

This role supports the University in contributing to a student centred and wellbeing focussed learning environment, ensuring a holistic approach to the provision of student support, and supporting staff capability in addressing the diverse needs of the student population.

The post holder will work with the leadership team in the Student Wellbeing Directorate to implement training delivery within an agreed framework, supporting the review of the skills and knowledge within the staff community in relation to student wellbeing. The Training & Development Officer will design and deliver a programme of training and development sessions, to ensure staff confidence and consistency in responding to students with a wide range of difficulties, concerns and general wellbeing issues.

This includes issues relating to health, personal relationships, accommodation, finance, disability provision and emotional wellbeing, including escalating concerns to senior colleagues where appropriate.

The Training & Development Officer will be skilled in delivering the training using a range of methods e.g. online, face-to-face or blended learning, and will have sound working knowledge of issues relating to student mental health, accessibility and inclusion in a higher education setting. The post holder is expected to work closely with colleagues across the University to ensure effective partnership and to adapt training content to meet local needs.

Main

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Identify training and development needs through gathering feedback and contributing to needs analysis led by senior colleagues in analysis to underpin a ‘whole university’ approach to supporting student wellbeing and inclusion.
  • Design and deliver training and development programmes based on the needs of the organisation using face to face, digital and blended learning options.
  • Produce supporting training materials for in-house courses working in partnership with colleagues in the Wellbeing & Inclusion teams.
  • Contribute to the planning and evaluation of the training programme, reviewing ongoing effectiveness and reporting on user engagement and satisfaction.
  • Ensure continuous improvement, updating training content to adapt to changes occurring in the university and HE sector.
  • Maintain an up to date understanding of the legislative and regulatory landscape within HE, specifically in relation to student wellbeing, accessibility and inclusion and ensure this informs training content under the guidance of senior colleagues.
  • To pursue continuous professional development to maintain knowledge base, self-awareness, and enhanced skills.
  • To collaborate with the wider multi-disciplinary team and associated colleagues, to share knowledge which informs ongoing service development and delivery.
  • To undertake any other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the grade of the post, recognising that these would not change the character of the post or level of responsibility.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge / Qualifications Essential
  • A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework Level 8 [Advanced Higher / Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 4, Higher National Diploma] or equivalent and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
  • A2 Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of designing and delivering training programmes (face-to-face, virtual, or e-learning) to support continuous professional development.
  • A3 Knowledge and understanding of the University/Higher Education landscape and the wellbeing and inclusion issues impacting university students.
  • A4 Understanding of the legal and ethical frameworks in which student support sits e.g. Data Protection Act, BACP Guidance, Freedom of Information Act and Equality Act (2010).
  • A5 Qualification or equivalent experience in the field of mental health or inclusive practice.
Desirable
  • B1 Qualification in Learning & Development, e.g. the Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and Development.
Skills Essential
  • C1 Proven instructional design and content creation skills.
  • C2 Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, active listening, empathy, and the ability to tailor communication to different audiences (professional and academic).
  • C3 Project management skills, effective time management and the ability to organise training deliver within agreed schedules.
  • C4 Analytical skills to contribute to the evaluation of feedback and data, and the ability to measure training effectiveness.
  • C5 Developed self-awareness and reflective skills, ability to work calmly under pressure and demonstrate emotional resilience and stamina.
  • C6 Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook, e-learning platforms and relevant software packages.
Experience Essential
  • E1 Experience of collaborative working in a similar role, ideally in a higher education setting.
